I’m So Lonely… I Just Want A Huggle

Feeling lonely is an all-encompassing, deep and desolate feeling. And if that wasn’t bad enough; new research has found that being lonely isn’t all that great for your health.  Which is rather worrying, considering recent studies found that 70% of people feel lonely or have experienced loneliness at some point in their lives.

So what does loneliness look like? Well, it comes in all different shapes and sizes, and sometimes can come at a time in your life when you least expect it.

Motherhood

They tell you that being a Mum is a full time job, but they rarely mention that it’s a lonely business. Motherhood makes it difficult to maintain friendships with those who aren’t mothers, plus the lack of energy due to the absence of sleep makes it impossible to find the time for a social life. Whilst the little one in your life becomes the centre of it, sometimes it’s important to occasionally surround yourself with normality and to speak a language that doesn’t consist of ‘goos’ and gaas’. Make sure you find time for socialising, even if that’s just a quick coffee with an old school friend or joining a yoga class. You deserve a social life!

Becoming A Student

Moving to a new school or university can be an exciting experience. However making friends in an unfamiliar territory is not only daunting but incredibly difficult. It’s important to remember that when you’re new to an area, it can take time to make connections. And once you’re settled in your new surroundings it will get easier to make friends. Unfortunately the beginning phase can be an incredibly lonely time, so make sure you do join clubs and don’t turn down party invitations. You never know who you might meet!

Moving To A New Place

When you move to a new city, country or even change jobs - this new experience can also be a lonely time. There’s nothing worse than trying to break the mould and find like-minded people in a cliquey and busy community.  It can be a very intimidating and isolating for a while but like you learnt when you moved to a new school; it takes time to find your feet and make friends. Make sure you socialise with your colleagues and join as many clubs and classes as you can. The more active you are, the higher chance you will have in meeting someone.
